Harmony Acres Farm
2012 Real Food CSA

What is a CSA?

CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture”. Consumers and farmers work together on behalf of each other. While the farmer is tending the earth on behalf of others, consumers share the costs of supporting the farm and share the risk of variable harvests (and also share the over-abundance of a particularly fruitful years). Membership in the CSA is based on shares of the harvest. Members are called shareholders and they subscribe or underwrite the harvest for the entire season in advance. Each project handles this relationship in its own fashion. Every farm is different in length of season, crops grown, level of social activities and price they set for their shares. CSA is not about cheap food, which is usually neither nourishing nor grown with care of the environment in mind. We encourage you to compare prices of a share to the supermarket's "cheap food."

What does a share cost?

We have 2 choices for this years CSA shares

1. Veggie CSA - $450 Veggie’s Only (May 1 thru October 2)
2. Meat/Veggie CSA - $625 Veggies + 12 chickens (every other week for
chicken), no eggs/soap this year. (May 1 thru October 2)

The share must be paid in full by February 15th, 2012.

Why is the payment due so early?

Payment must be made by Feb. 15th so that our farm can hae a reasonable amount of time to purchase seeds/supplies. This also allows us to stay out of debt!

What happens if I don't pick up my box?

If you'll be away and can't pick up your box, let us know in advance and we'll issue you a $25 credit which may be used at any time here at the farm, to add to another week's share, or to be spent at farmers market at any time. If we don't know in advance that you'll be away and you don't pick up your box, we will donate it to a local family.

How much produce will I get each week?

Your CSA box will contain 8 to 12 different items, depending on what’s available that week. About $25 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables is based on our market prices. Our members tell us it’s a good amount for a small family of 2 to 4. Plus you share in any bumper crop abundance. If you are interested in canning tomatoes let us know and we will send you an email when we have surplus that would otherwise go to waste.

An example of a May All Inclusive Share might be:
2 head lettuce
1 bag spinach
1 pint of Strawberries
1 bunch of spring onions
1 head of cabbage
1 bag of pea shoots
1 bunch of spring garlic
1 bunch of Swiss chard
1 bunch of Italian Parsley
1 bunch of radishes
+
1 4 lb. broiler chicken

An example of a July All Inclusive Share might include:
2 lbs potatoes
2 lbs tomatoes
1 lb of squash
1 lb green beans
1 lb onions
1 lb green peppers
1 lb cucumbers
1 pint blueberries
1 bunch of basil
1 bunch of flowers
+
1 broiler chicken

How many people does this feed?

Our Real Food Veggie share will feed two adults with a healthy appetite for vegetables (this does not include vegan adults—vegans might consider purchasing 2 shares). If you are uncertain about being able to use all the produce, you might find friends to split the share with, either by divvying up the box each week or taking alternate weeks for the entire share.

Are there half shares available?

No! We have found that a half share is a sufficient amount of veggies. Our Full share is intended to stimulate your weekly dosage of veggies! Our farm is available for more shopping as well.

What types of vegetables can I expect to find in my box?

It depends on the season. Check out our brochure to get an idea of what to expect. The brochure includes our core crops; we also grow many new crops that we’ll throw in for a taste bud tease!

When can I pick up my box?

We will be delivering in Wilkesboro on Tuesday at 5 pm. You are also welcome to come out and pick up your share at the farm on at a scheduled time. Let us know what works best for you.

How can I find directions to my pick-up location, and how long will you
be there?

The Tuesday drop off at 5 pm will be held at Talia’s Espresso in North Wilkesboro.
Call if you need directions to the farm. We will be at the drop off location for a 20 minute period. If you can not make it, please let us know, otherwise your box will be donated.

What if I go on Vacation?

What if I go on vacation ? You have two options:
1. Have a friend or neighbor pick up in your absence.
2. After the pick up time expires the vegetables will be donated to the a family in need.

Can I give a gift of membership?

Giving the gift of a CSA Membership to a friend or family member is a wonderful idea. We can provide a custom gift certificate and a packet of information for the recipient.
